I've had family members who used Toro products for over 10 years, and they were always impressed by the longevity and quality. Unfortunately, it seems that something has changed with Toro's manufacturing standards.
In April 2023, I purchased the Toro model #21462 to replace my old Craftsman mower.
From the beginning, I faced performance issues. About 1 in every 10 startups would result in the mower smoking, and I couldnt mow my yard without setting the mower to the highest height, mowing, then lowering the height gradually for multiple passes. This was frustrating, especially since I mow my lawn weekly, so the grass wasnt overly longsomething my previous mower handled with ease.
I contacted Toro, and they suggested I accept a side discharge attachment, which took months to arrive due to backorderslikely because other customers were experiencing similar issues. It finally arrived at the end of August/beginning of September.
With the side chute, I could mow my lawn, but still had to use the bag afterward. Not ideal, but at least it was workable.
However, the situation worsened. On July 8th, 2024, my teenage son called me at work to say the mower was smoking excessively, with oil leaking from the exhaust. I immediately contacted the dealer, who directed me to a local repair center.
I dropped the mower off on July 9th, and as I write this on August 15th, Im still waiting for resolution.
The repair shop informed me that theres a dent on the piston and foreign matter in the cylinderlikely from manufacturing. Theyve opened a claim and sent pictures to Toro/Briggs, but I just received a call from a representative who mentioned that they need more information and photos, and there's still a chance this issue might not be covered under warranty.
I live in Montana, where the mowing season runs from April to September. In a good year, I might use my mower for 6 months.
After only 9 months of use, Im now dealing with an oil-leaking, smoke-spewing, underpowered mower that might not even be covered under warranty. This experience has been incredibly disappointing, and its clear that Toro's quality has declined significantly.

My toro mower deck has warped. It has become uneven corner to corner. And the bagger will not fit evenly to catch grass.

Need clarification of breakdown
The drawing is Pump Idler and belt assy . Pulley is #12 screw is 11, bolt is 17.
17 is screw HHF 3234-11 , 11 pm is 3356-24 washer , this holds the pulley to idled. Thank you

I found them at Walmart.
I was upset and the customer service guy starts cursing me so we have it out in the phone. I will NEVER deal with Toro again.

I'm not happy with product and story will not take back. They said it had to be able to be put back on the shelf to sell as new or they would not take it back. How would I know if it's what I need for the job unless I use it.

Way too difficult to simply get a grass chute dispenser. These should be available at the dealer or simply come with the mower.

I sent the blow to Public Relations at Toro.
To whom it may concern,
Attached you will find my purchase document from Home Depot, a picture of the snow blower, the Serial # and Model # and the repair finding from Johnsons Hardware.
I purchased a Toro Power Clear 518 ZE 18 inch Self Propelled Single Stage Gas Snow Blower on 26 Oct 2023 from Home Depot Online.
My son lives in Norwich CT. We picked up the machine total build (no assembly required) on 2 November 2023.
At the time, 2 November 2023 oil was in the snow blower.
It did not snow until the end of December.
My son put gas into the snow blower and verified that it still had oil by checking the oil stick.
It started and ran for about 15 seconds.
It has not worked since.
On Friday, I called Toro Customer Service 860-739-**** and hit service repair locations and put in the zip code for my sons address.
I was informed to take the product to Johnsons Hardware Service Department in Groton CT (860) 448-****.
My son took the snow blower to Johnsons Hardware on Saturday the 17th of February and was informed that the motor did not have any compression or oil in it. We were informed that the motor needed replacement.
Johnsons Hardware could service it, but they do not do any warranty work. Took the machine home.
On Monday, called Toro Customer Service again and was informed to take the snow blower to Advanced Power Equipment in East Lyme CT (860) 739-****.
Delivered the machine in the afternoon and was called on Tuesday morning (today) and was informed that the Connecting Rod came apart inside the snow blower. Informed us to get Home Depot to say that they put the oil in the machine and if it didnt work, they would be responsible.
Called Home Depot, that snow blower comes with no installation required and they could not confirm if one of their employees did or did not put oil in the machine in October 2023.
Called and spoke to Advance Power Equipment (Tammy, Lauri (Mgr)) and they stated that they attempted to get approval from Toro to repair the snow blower and it was denied because they
Believe that the snow blower was funned without oil and that caused the damage.
(Which is not true, only ran for 15 seconds).
Called your customer service at Toro and spoke to Bianca, Ashley, Francis and Manager Michael today.
He informed me that the decision to not approve the warranty work was not decided by the
Customer Service Department and that their hands are tied.
I informed Michael that I was sending this email to the Public Relations of Toro and he said he could not do anything.
Please help.
I paid $573 for this gift to my son and really would like for it to be fixed. There is NO WAY that my son did anything wrong in this situation.
Please respond with your answer as soon as possible because the snow blower is still at the Advance Power Equipment location pending your decision on the warranty.
I also provided work estimates and pictures of the brand new snow blower.

Probably not. Management would never bend down low enough to call a customer. Look at where the majority of responses from customers are at ---- 1 and 2 stars.
After calling customer service, the person I reached was pleasant but poorly trained and anything but willing to listen to my questions. Instead of transferring me to someone in marketing or sales who could answer my inquiries, she guessed at what one of the terms was by using the same words to define the term. When I responded with another question, she was not paying attention to my question and asked if there was anything else. I stated that I had just asked another question.
Why do I have to ask a question that ends with "I just asked you a question"? Very poorly trained customer service! To think, I was getting ready to look for and purchase a brand new Toro lawn mower to replace my 30-year-old Toro mower. After looking at the reviews on your website concerning Toro experiences and the unfriendly customer service, I have no choice but to look for another competitor with extremely fine customer service and who represents his/her company well with answering all customer inquiries related to buying a new lawn mower.
I did not create the marketing terms that Toro uses. They did. I could not locate a page on their website listing what the various marketing terms mean. Obviously, management saw that as un-needed.
I must be the only person who has ever asked what their various marketing terms on new lawn mowers mean.
After reading the various posted experiences and reviews of Toro, I now have my answer. Very poor management and very poorly trained customer service!

Pathetic warranty service
I bought a 60 Volt Max Recycler mower. The battery went bad under warranty.
I took it to an authorized service center. It took 2 weeks for them to even look at the battery to determine it was bad. They had to order it. It has been 4 weeks and still no battery.
Talked to Toro. They have nothing to do with handling parts for warranty, that is up to the independent service center. Call them, it will be in when it gets in.
They tell me they will call me back, crickets. I need my *** mower back.
